Dear Reader, Love Karen Charles

Dear Reader,

I didn’t start out thinking, I want to be an author. I started as a teacher and a listener. For years, I worked with children during moments of real upheaval, social unrest, trauma, fear, and uncertainty. I saw how deeply children absorb what’s happening around them, even when they don’t have the words to express it.

Writing became a way for me to make sense of those experiences and to offer stories that could help others do the same. Whether I’m writing for adults or children, my goal has always been to tell stories that heal, that open conversations, and that remind us of our shared humanity. Evan’s Gift came from that same place, wanting to reach children early, before the world hardens them.

Evan’s Gift is based on my experience as a kid earning my own bike, growing up in Africa.

The idea came from watching how children respond to kindness, both when they receive it and when they give it. I’ve seen classrooms change because of one child’s gentle act or quiet courage.

Evan’s Gift grew out of the belief that kindness is not small or passive; it’s powerful. I wanted to create a story that shows children that they already have something meaningful to offer the world, simply by noticing others and choosing compassion. Evan doesn’t have superpowers; his “gift” is something every child can access, and that was very important to me.

Evan is a thoughtful, observant child. He’s not the loudest or the most outgoing, but he pays attention. He notices when others are hurting or left out. Evan represents so many children who feel deeply but don’t always know how to express it.

What makes Evan special is that he learns his kindness matters, that even small actions can ripple outward and change how people feel about themselves and each other.

The other characters are the people in Evan’s world, friends, classmates, roommates, and adults, who are affected by his kindness. They’re intentionally relatable so children can see themselves and their communities in the story.

Each character reflects a different emotional experience, helping young readers recognize feelings like loneliness, gratitude, and connection in a gentle, age-appropriate way.

Kindness and empathy are skills we have to nurture, especially in children. Evan’s Gift opens the door to meaningful conversations at home, in classrooms, and in counseling spaces about how our actions affect others.

It’s a story that reassures children that they matter and empowers them to make a difference simply by being who they are. In today’s world, that message feels more important than ever.

Love,

Karen Charles

Dear Reader, Love Michael Dow

Dear Reader,

Our Society needs help.  We have poor health literacy, problems with diversity and inclusion, the love of reading has been replaced with short videos, many are not intellectually stimulated, families spend much more time apart than together, there is a need for science education to reach the masses, and there is a large nursing shortage.

The Nurse Florence® series addresses all these issues.

This series is a children’s health book series that introduces some medical words to kids in every book.  The series answers some basic questions that most kids have about how their body works.  The books that address diseases will help families understand what a family member is going through, treatment options, and how to prevent the preventable diseases.  This series will help kids make informed decisions about their health and encourages a healthy lifestyle.

In regards to diversity and inclusion, each Nurse Florence is different in every book so that all races and ethnicities are represented.  If someone sees a person of their same race and ethnicity doing something, they are more likely to have the belief that they can do it also.  We are only getting to the future together.

The general science books are short and can help instill a love of reading for those that dislike it, in my opinion.  The engaging drawings will help children stay engaged in the storyline and not feel that are only being taught something.  They will learn through fun.

The disease books going into the pathophysiology and do not shy away from some of the technical terms.  We want to intellectually stimulate children and their parents with every book.  We believe they can learn the material even though some of it may be new information.  We want to help families feel empowered.

In regards to families spending more time apart, we want to encourage a sense of community by families reading the books together.  They will learn together, laugh together, realize things together, and have a starting point for further discussions to keep communication flowing.

The Nurse Florence® series brings college level science material down to an elementary level.  These books could be used in classrooms around the country and the world since translations into other languages has already started.  Science is amazing and kids should get to experience that feeling.

Finally, there is a large nursing shortage and this series could inspire a whole new generation to pursue a career in the health sciences.

I hope you enjoy the series as much as I have enjoyed writing it.

Cheers,

Michael Dow, RN, MS, MHA, MSM

Sometimes it seems only a nurse can bring technical information down to an understanding that an ordinary person can grasp.  The Nurse Florence® book series provides high quality medical information that even a child can grasp.  By introducing young kids to correct terminology and science concepts at an early age, we can help increase our children’s health literacy level as well as help to prepare them for courses and jobs in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.  We need more scientists so I hope that many children will enjoy this book series and consider a job involving science.

Dear Reader, Love Negrita Smart

Dear Reader,

I am so glad you picked this book up and held it in your little hands. Not only am I glad that you are holding this book at this very moment, but I am thankful that you are reading this book. This book was written because I thought about you. My first thought was that you are growing up in a world today that is different from the world I grew up in when I was your age. Let me tell you how my childhood was different. I grew up in a small town. I knew everyone in my neighborhood and there were many children in my neighborhood. I remember days of playing a game of freeze tag outside with my friends, eating plums from plum trees, and catching lightning bugs. Can you believe that? A bug that shines in the dark. I actually put the lightning bugs in mason jars hoping they would live forever. I grew up in a time when Summer breaks from school were very long breaks from school. Summer breaks lasted four months. That’s right. Four months. During those months, I also went to vacation bible school to learn about Noah and the Ark, Moses and the burning bush, and the great fish that swallowed Jonah. By the time Summer break was officially over I was taller and ready to go back to school and ride the yellow bus and meet my teachers for the school year. These were fun times for me and I have a lot of good memories growing up in a small town.

While reading this letter, I am sure you have probably asked your parents or guardian, what is freeze tag? You probably buy plums from the grocery store and will never pick them from a tree. Hopefully, you will try to catch a lightning bug if you ever have the opportunity. Yes, things have changed for you and are different from when I grew up but there are a few things that should never change. The first is kindness. Always be kind to others. The second thing that should never change is thinking of others. Always ask yourself how you would want to be treated. This will help you know how to treat other people. The last thing that should never change is being willing

to help others. It’s okay to help people when they need your help. There is one more thing I want to tell you. I thought about this too when I wrote this book for you. Believe in yourself. I want you to know that although you are a young person, you can make a big difference in your neighborhood, in your school, and in the world. You are the present and the future generation. All things are possible when you believe. So, believe in yourself and I believe in you too.

Love Always,

Dear Reader, Love JD Wise

Dear Reader,

I wrote this book not to be mean or unkind in any way.  I wrote it because I care.  It appears to me that you have been totally consumed by your cell phone.  I don't understand how this happened because you are only 12.  You are always on it and you never set it down.  When you misplace it, you go into a full onset of a panic attack (with a side of hissy fit).  I miss the sound of your voice and the sweet conversation that we used to have.  It has been a long time since we had a conversation without emoji's.  You keep telling me that your cell phone is a necessity of life.  But when I ask what you've been doing on it, you tell me, "stuff".  Well, What kind of "stuff?"  You learned how to tell time in kindergarten.  You don't need to ask the phone what time it is. You are a smart and brilliant young person.  I want to have a phone, especially when you want to leave the house.  However, your phone is not necessary to clean your room; brush your teeth, do your homework, play a game; wash the dog, eat dinner, talk to mom, or even to go to the potty (There are no apps for that).  Your eyes were not designed to be focused on a screen for 9 hours every day.  They were designed so that you may see the beauty that is all around you.  All around you, not just 3 inches by 5 inches.  And those poor thumbs of yours - You move them so fast across that screen that one day they might fly right off!  What will you do then?  How will you be able to hold anything that it precious?  One more thing and then I'm done.  When you are interrupted during your phone time; or when you are asked to do something, you tend to turn into a monster.  A big, green ogre.  On the outside, you may still look like you, but the door slamming, feet stomping, and the yelling are definitely ogre characteristics.  Because I care, I wrote this book just for you.  So you can see the silly things that your phone makes you do.  If you don't want to stay an ogre, then all you have to do is to interact with real people and make nice memories together.  Your cell phone can't replace your brilliant imagination.

Sincerely,

The Author

Welcome to NOMOPHOBIA – A PLACE IN TIME WHERE OVERUSED CELLULAR DEVICES TURN CHILDREN INTO OGRES.

This is a somewhat true, mostly exaggerated story of modern-day children – children who have spent way too much time on their phones. One night the children are mysteriously turned into ogres. At first the children blame each other for their condition. When they finished blaming each other, they worked together to find a cure. They searched the house for a cure…but they could not find one. They tried to wash the ogre off…but it stayed on.

They had all but given up when sissy’s phone accidently falls into the fish tank. When the phone gets wet, a hidden message appears: YOU WERE TURNED INTO OGRES, BECAUSE ON THE PHONE YOU DID STAY! NOW, PUT IT AWAY AND GO OUT AND PLAY!

So the children rushed outside, where they returned to normal. That day the children learned a valuable lesson. OVERUSED CELL PHONES TURN CHILDREN INTO OGRES.

Dear Young Reader…

I am so happy that you are reading Frazier: The Very Special Cat! I hope you enjoy my story about a cat who gets rescued from a hard life outdoors. There are many cats like Frazier who live outside, and I wanted to write a book to show that we can help them. It feels really good when you help a cat (or dog) who has no home.

Did you know that Frazier is a real cat? He is! You can find a photo of the real Frazier on the back cover of the book. Just as the book says, I first spotted Frazier in my backyard. I was feeding and caring for some outdoor cats. Many of them used to have homes and families, but they got lost or left behind. I wanted to help them find new, safe homes.

Cats have a hard life when they live outside. They have to search for food, water, and safe places to sleep, and they can get sick or hurt. They don’t have a human family to help them. So, I decided to help the cats I saw in my yard.

When Frazier showed up with an eye infection and an ear that looked hurt, I knew I had to bring him to the cat doctor (a veterinarian). If you haven’t read the book yet, I won’t spoil the rest of the story by telling you what happened. But I can promise you this — Frazier’s story has a very happy ending. Today, he lives with a human mom who loves him a lot, and he enjoys living the good life.

Do you have a cat? Do you like animals? I hope so! Even if you don’t have your own cat (or dog), there are many things you and your parents can do to help stray animals. You can tell your parents if you see a cat or dog outside that doesn’t seem to have a home, and you can work together to help the animal if it needs help. If you have a cat or dog, your parents can make sure your pet stays safe and doesn’t get lost or hurt the way Frazier did.

I hope you enjoy the book and the beautiful pictures by my friend Laurel McKinstry Petersen! You can also read the first two books in the Stray Cat Stories series if you haven’t already: Little White: The Feral Cat Who Found a Home and Tribbs: the Very Special Cat. Each book is a great story about a real cat who got rescued.

I would love to hear from you or to see photos of you reading the books. You can ask your mom or dad to send them to me at the Stray Cat Stories Picture Books Facebook page.

Have fun reading Frazier’s story!

All the best,

Dear Reader and Fellow Adventurer…

Hello from Azra’s Pith! Thank you for joining the adventure. I have a few tips for you before you begin. First, the thought of jumping through the passageway can be a scary idea (you’ll find out in chapter 4). Once you are in, the excitement and energy take over and it feels like the best rollercoaster you’ll ever ride. Enjoy it because you will land on the dirt of Copious Forest in a flash.

When you meet Ferdinand, he may come off as a little... well, testy. The truth is, he is a bit on the prickly side. He is also one of the most loyal friends one can have. Ask him to take you to the closest waterfront town. If you are lucky enough to see Market Day make sure you visit with Rosie the fox. She loves to trade and always has rare treasures from all over the realm.

Another thing to remember, birds in Azra’s pith are not always what they seem. If you catch one at the right time you may find yourself in the presence of an Empyrean Wizard. Most are good, peaceful and wise... but there may be an evil one out there with dark powers; so be careful!

If you need to get around, scamper fouls are the quickest mode of transportation on the ground (Empyrean Wizards can soar across the realm’s sky at amazing speed). Scamper fouls are also great companions! Hold on tight though! The ride is bumpy!

Always be aware of your surroundings! Bandits will catch you off guard to pick your pockets or capture you for ransom! If you happen to see Sebastion’s ship sailing up the river, try to hop aboard for ride! They are a spirited group and a swashbuckling adventure at sea is an absolute certainty!

Azra’s Pith is a place of wonder, filled with magic and fantastic creatures. Beware of what lurks in the shadows. There are dark forces at work. If you are willing to join in the quest with John William Celeste, and the others; prepare yourself for the journey of a lifetime! See you there!

Best,

E.P. Bellows

A few random things about me…

Um, let’s see… when I was eight, I had a pet turkey. I used to take it with me on my very short lived paper route. Needless to say, I was terrible at delivering the paper. No one wanted a “Dollar Saver” with turkey poop splattered across the front page. Apparently that’s where the best coupons are.

Books… well, “Treasure Island” is a fantastic pirate tale. I love just about anything by Roald Dahl. I would also like to thank C.S Lewis for sending me on an unrelenting childhood quest for portals to amazing worlds (even in the most unpleasant locations, e.g… the older brother’s closet, etc…)

I write fantasy stories for children. Yep – I am a HUGE fantasy geek. I can’t help myself! It’s too darn awesome to escape to another realm with sorcerers and wizards. The underlying theme in my stories is empowerment, self love, and living purposefully.

When football is on I turn into a different person. I may even use a curse word or two… or three. I enjoy running; which is a good thing because I need to do it in order to fit into my jeans.

I love to cook and really, really love to eat. I have a theory that avocados actually contain super powers and have the amazing ability to make any snack epic. I also love garlic… which, according to my loved ones, also has an unfortunate super power … the pungent breath-inator… or something of that nature.

Few things make me smile more than chocolate, cheese… AND, if the Chargers would make it to the Super Bowl again – just once:)

About the Book

John William Drake was born an explorer; just like many, many Drakes before him. His adventure really began with the discovery of a book hidden in the ceiling, followed by the mysterious disappearance of his father. He lived every day in misery until his twelfth birthday. A new friend gave him an invitation he could not turn down… follow me and change your destiny.

He never imagined being captured by bandits and taken to a ship riddled with river rats was part of his fate. Not just any bandits – the Bandits of Basswood; known to be a ruthless and wild crew of thieves. Trying to escape would be a ridiculous idea. No one has ever escaped and lived to tell about it. Uncovering traces of his missing father gave him hope and upped the stakes. John William was determined to get off the ship alive and search for the missing pieces of the puzzle. The chase out of Basswood was on. He took a chance to change his destiny and ended up on a wild ride to solve the most important mystery of his life.

Dear Reader…

I am so excited and thankful that you chose my book, Laurel’s Marvelous Kingdom. You will love it! It’s got all the great elements of a fairy tale story – princesses, a beautiful castle and an enchanting forest setting, a handsome prince, a feisty witch, and what’s even more cool, is it includes a fun-loving pink bunny. There is drama, comedy, darkness, friendships, love, and more.

The idea for Laurel’s Marvelous Kingdom came from the desire to write an enticing, emotional, and comedic kid’s story using old-style fairy tale principles – princesses, a handsome prince, a beautiful castle setting, and some witchy craziness. I also wanted to teach the children who read my book an important lesson. In this case, the lesson being that everyone is unique and to respect the uniqueness of others.

Reading is an amazing and inspiring pastime. I hope this book enlightens you, let’s you dream, and your mind wonder. If you love it and hopefully, you will, please tell your friends about it. Share this story with others. You can learn more about me and my stories at www.monique-roy.com. Happy reading and here’s to more great adventures!

Sincerely,

Monique Roy

Dear Reader…

Drewsilla, the Shelter Puppy is a real dog that had a very rough start at life. Drewsilla, and her litter mates were found abandoned, on the side of the road next to their mother, who had been hit by a car.  You might ask yourself how could anyone be so cruel. Unfortunately, that’s what happened but there are good people in this world. A kind person brought Drewsilla and her litter mates to the local shelter to be cared for.  The kind workers at the shelter worked very hard to nurse the puppies back to health and make them available for adoption.

There are so many dogs that need loving homes. Shelters are full of them. Some of these animals, whether they were dogs or cats endured many hardships before coming to the shelters. Some animals may not find their forever home. That’s what almost happened to Drewsilla.  Drewsilla, was a very shy, withdrawn dog. She was afraid of people, even though the shelter had treated her with kindness it was hard for her to trust. Many people tried to get Drewsilla to trust them.

The day my daughter visited the shelter she had come to look at a different dog, Drewsilla, who had never shown any interest in the people passing by her cage CHOSE my daughter. I don’t know why but when she heard my daughters voice she responded.
It was love at first sight a match made in heaven. Drewsilla, captured my daughter and son inlaws heart. They never saw the dog they came for.  Drewsilla is a loving addition to my family. I affectionately refer to her as my granddog.

I hope you enjoy her story and if you are looking to add to your family consider going to the local shelter and adopting. You will not be sorry.

With much Love,

Karen Carew Oakes

Drewsilla has a beautiful black coat, intelligent eyes, and ears that stand straight up.

Drewsilla, though, is scared. She seems afraid of everyone and everything and hides in the back of her cage when families come to visit. As her friendly siblings each get adopted, lonely Drewsilla remains. The staff even worries that she might never find a home. Then, one day, something amazing happens.
The Johnsons come to the shelter to look at another dog and see Drewsilla, who miraculously finds the courage to stop hiding and say hello. All shelter dogs deserve the chance to find a loving family, and this is the true story of Drewsilla -- how she overcomes her fears, finds her family, and gets a second chance at a happy life.
