It is the first time I have taken everything I know about the subconscious and poured it into a fictional world. In many ways, it is the most personal and daring book I have ever created.
I wrote NightBorn for readers who love psychological mystery, emotional depth, and a touch of the uncanny. But I also wrote it for readers like my daughter - those who gravitate toward dark, twisty, atmospheric stories but would never pick up one of my dream guides. I wanted fiction to become a secret doorway into dreamwork, a way to teach the language of the subconscious through a page turning story rather than instruction. If you pay close attention to the symbols and shadows throughout the novel, you’ll find real dream decoding woven into the plot making it a crash course in how to understand and learn and grow from your dreams.
The path to bringing this book into the world was far from smooth. My long-standing nonfiction publishers couldn’t quite envision me stepping into fiction, so I had to make the difficult decision to publish independently. It meant less support, more uncertainty, and a great deal of creative risk. But it also meant freedom. It meant trusting my instincts. It meant believing in the story even when the path ahead wasn’t clear. NightBorn taught me to practice what I preach: that intuition is a compass worth following, even when others doubt the direction it points.
If you’re reading this before starting the book, I hope you enter its world with curiosity and a sense of wonder. Let the atmosphere draw you in. Listen closely to the dreams, both spoken and unspoken.
