Dear Reader, Love Sher J. Stultz

Dear Reader…

If you’re not from the local Puget Sound region, please load Google maps, type in West Seattle, and zoom in because the story you’re reading takes place in a real neighborhood at the north end of West Seattle near the North Admiral and Alki neighborhoods. I fell in love with this place years ago on my way to a doctor’s appointment and kept returning to explore it. When these characters were emerging in my imagination, I decided West Seattle would be an ideal place for a quirky bunch of middle schoolers to begin their journey together. It feels like a small town tucked away across the bridge from the big city.

You might be wondering about the names of some of the characters. Well, if your parents are nerdy scientists, you could end with names from Greek mythology like Aeneas, Persephone, and Socrates. If your parents are quirky, madly-in-love musicians who occasionally miscommunicate you could end up being named Colonel Johan or C.J. because your mom craved fried chicken and your dad loved Mozart! And if you’re you are co-adopting a stray dog with your best friend, you might have to compromise and name him Sput. Many of the names are shortened to nicknames because I’m always giving family, friends and even my students nicknames. So, Socrates is Sox. Persephone is Seph. Tabitha is Tab. Keep reading. I bet you’ll find many more instances.

You might stumble across some regional references in this story that might be unfamiliar to you. A friend of mine was reading The Rescue and called me, asking, “I don’t get what a 12 is?” This might be part of the story that readers find odd if they don’t watch pro football. A “12” is a devoted Seahawks fan. At the time this story unfolded, the Seahawks were having record-breaking seasons, led by legion of boom and their new rookie quarterback. Since many of my students were 12s, I wanted to include a character who embodied all the game-day rituals the locals practiced. The decision to cast C.J. as the 12 instead of other characters wasn’t completely random. It fit his personality best, but rather than being a fan of one of the famous players on the team, he is obsessed with the coach.

Book one is the start of this series. You’ll just be getting to know all the characters when the story ends on a cliff hanger. But don’t worry, book two picks up right where book one leaves off. A few new characters make appearances in book two and the one I am particularly excited for you to meet is a sexy young time traveler. I can’t say anymore without spoiling the next book, so stay tuned.

Best wishes for many adventures reading books or other pursuits in your life!

It all starts when the sheets go slack, and Aeneas vanishes! He and his two best friends, C.J. and Tabitha are spellbound as they watch the video feed of his disappearance and witness him climbing through his bedroom window an hour later, wearing different socks. Aeneas Entwistle, a slightly above average eighth grader is about to discover that the mystery of waking up with different socks is much more than just a prank.

Adding to that dilemma, Aeneas is struggling with new feelings for Tabitha and loses his cool during her birthday party. Meanwhile, Aeneas’s twenty-something daughter, Cassie has traveled thirty-eight years from the future hoping to find any small detail that might help locate her missing father. Enlisting Harold, the Entwistle’s quirky housekeeper, Cassie works to rescue a middle-aged Aeneas, who vanishes into the timestream when a 7.2 earthquake strikes northwest Washington in May of 2053. But Cassie’s presence in the past might have unforeseen consequences for everyone in her circle. As she struggles to find her father, a carefully guarded family secret is revealed, and Cassie must choose between altering the past or violating the shamanic rules of time travel!

“Author Sher J. Stultz weaves an intricate plot filled with unexpected twists and turns that hooks you in from the first page and refuses to let go until the end. Moving at a blistering pace, the narrative is full of intrigue, mystery, and a sense of wonder that you find in well-written adventure tales. The characters are colorful and full of life. Their distinct quirks and idiosyncrasies only make them more appealing to the reader. I adored the friendship between Aeneas, Tabitha, and C.J. I also found myself enjoying the dynamic between Cassie and Harold. Recommended to young adult sci-fi/fantasy lovers.”Reviewed By Pikasho Deka for Readers’ Favorite
