Dear Reader…

It is beyond thrilling to have the honor of speaking to you regarding my new young adult fantasy novel, Banewind.

So much love, time, and dedication have been put into these pages—weaving together a magical tale that I hope will capture your hearts. Writing is such a personal expression, a grand vulnerability that creates a unique intimacy seldom found elsewhere. Imagination is one of the greatest gifts we have as human beings, and storytelling is one of the main siphons to unleash that power.

I started writing at a young age, after developing my own admiration for the countless fantasy authors who have shared their own words. I can recall back to grade school, staying up late in my bedroom, reading into the deep hours of the night, eyes wide with excitement with every turn of the page. Naturally, I stumbled into the realm of creative writing, and continued honing that passion until present day. And what a joyous feeling it is!

I began working on Banewind several years ago, with the goal of creating an epic tale that included all the fantastical adventures I found myself addicted to when reading other young adult literature. I created a world that was filled with magic and peril, with complex characters and deep, emotional stories that would keep the readers engaged. I wanted them to feel as though they were a part of the journey—living it through the pages, captivated by the narrative to see where it was going—and how it would ultimately conclude.

This first book of the series is mainly an introduction, setting the groundwork for what is to come. And what an introduction it is! As you follow along with the main protagonist, Genevieve DeWinter, I hope for nothing more than you to be able to relate with her. To be there as she discovers the magical world of Banewind, the unfamiliar territory of nurturing a blossoming romance, and the strengthening of bonds that form between family, friends, and allies as she navigates a world she could only dream existed. The story is one of hope, one of love, and one of imagination. And as the series continues on, though the challenges she encounters will be daunting, they pale in comparison to the confidence, strength, and endurance she discovers along the way.

And so, I do hope you enjoy this new story that I have created for you, the Reader. And I wish you nothing but the best in the upcoming year. Remember to speak your voice, revel in the imaginary, and dream forever.

About the Author

Matt Chapman grew up outside of Cleveland and now lives in St. Louis, Missouri where he is completing his residency in Psychiatric medicine at Washington University in St. Louis. He is a graduate of Creighton University School of Medicine where he obtained his MD and a graduate of Saint Louis University where he majored in Biology.

Matt has had a passion for writing and reading since childhood and continues to find time for these interests among his other pursuits, including medical education and leadership studies. He is currently working on his next novel in The Banewind Series.

With the help of new allies, Genevieve must fight to stay alive as she unravels the mystery and danger that have shattered the stability of the life she once knew before the Voidweavers succeed in shadowing the world in chaos and darkness once again.
