Dear Reader…
Thank you for being a reader. You have a very special
mission in the world. Your job is to take imaginary worlds and make them real.
To breathe life into characters that only exist as written words until you
believe in them. Without readers, writers are simply shouting words down into
the canyon. There is no echo, no reverberation, no continuing until a reader
picks up these words and invites them into their homes and their hearts.
I don’t just thank those of you who read my Sgt. Windflower
books, although those that do have my heartfelt appreciation. I am talking
about all readers. Those of you who go into a bookstore and pull our books off
the bookshelf and walk them to the cashier. Those of you who order online and
read at night by the light of your e-reader. Those of you who go to the local
library and check out of books and then share what you think in your book club.
Thank you, so much.
We are engaged in a great partnership, you and I. For my
part I will continue to try and write the best books I can, to make every book
better in some way than the last. I will try and stay true to the things that
you have told me that you like about the Sgt. Windflower books, and to improve
the things that you tell me you can do with less of, or without entirely. All I
am asking for is your time. But I know that it a lot to ask, because you have
so little of it. You have so many other things and activities and people to
care for and about. But if you give me your time, I will give you a story that
at the end will help you feel a little better and maybe even a little more
hopeful, and you will go to sleep thinking that that was a worthwhile use of
your time.
Thank you for being a reader. Without you we would have no
need for writers or books or libraries. But then the world would truly be a
little colder, wouldn’t it?
