Dear Reader, Love John Beilharz

Dear Reader,

Thank you for taking a moment to step into my world, a world that began in the wild, electric pulse of Hollywood in the late 1960s and 70s, and the unexpected twists life throws at a young person trying to find his place in it. My book, Tender Dreams, Harsh Reality, is more than a memoir; it is a journey through a turbulent era that shaped a generation and, ultimately, shaped me.

I grew up in a time and place overflowing with contradictions, sunshine and grit, dreams and danger, innocence and upheaval. Hollywood wasn’t just my hometown; it was a character in my life: unpredictable, seductive, and sometimes unforgiving. Graduating from Hollywood High in 1967 meant stepping out of the classroom and straight into a storm, Vietnam, the draft lottery, the drug culture, the music that defined a movement, jail time in Mexico, and the social awakening that changed everything.

As I look back, I feel privileged to share with you the period of my life when I truly became a man. It didn’t happen in a single moment, and it didn’t arrive wrapped in clarity. It emerged in the quiet spaces between chaos, during nights when the world felt uncertain, during friendships that pushed me to be better, during losses that forced me to grow, and during opportunities that challenged me to rise to my own potential. Those years were rough-edged and unpredictable, but they carved out my understanding of responsibility, courage, and how to keep standing when the ground beneath you shifts. To invite you into that time is an honor, because those memories aren’t just stories, they are the building blocks of who I became.

For years, I worked with wayward teens, believing deeply in the power of second chances. The work was meaningful, but it also burned me out. Teaching psychology at a junior college taught me patience, but the routine left me restless. Being a therapist was trying as it was to stationery and routine. In time, I discovered that my true calling was creating my own path, building my own marketing and advertising firm from scratch. That leap didn’t just give me a career; it gave me back my voice.

In writing Tender Dreams, Harsh Reality, I wanted to capture both the tenderness and the turbulence of a life lived fully, sometimes recklessly, often imperfectly, but always honestly. My hope is that as you read, you’ll recognize pieces of your own story: the dreams you chased, the mistakes that taught you, the moments that shaped who you are today.

Thank you for letting me share this journey with you. It means more than you know.

Warmly,

John Beilharz

Dear Reader, Love Randy C. Dockens & Robert Irvin

Dear Reader,

Have you ever wanted to write a novel? Or, perhaps, improve your writing so that you can say what you want to say in an engaging way so readers will want to read what you have to say? Then read on. We have just the thing for you.

“Oh, I have the desire, for sure,” you say. “But I don’t want to read another boring book about the subject.” Then, also read on. We feel we have the solution to that dilemma as well.

We have a book that is designed to be clever, informative, and focus on those elements that are the most critical for new writers and those who want to improve their writing techniques. This book, Mastering the ABCs of Excellent Writing, is written something like an ABC primer. Why? Because we wanted it to be simple but contain the essential elements one should focus on. The chapter titles and summary sentences at the end of each chapter not only help you find and distill the knowledge presented in each chapter, but also start with that same letter of the alphabet. Why would we do that? Two reasons. One, we thought it would be helpful for readers to better remember those elements of that particular chapter. And, second, we wanted to demonstrate that an author has an innumerable arsenal of words at their disposal to wield their writing to their will. Words are tools and they can be used any way an author wishes to achieve their goal.

I will say that, while successful, it also proved challenging. Many letters have numerous words that begin with that letter giving an author the opportunity to use them as they see fit. Yet, some letters, like the letter X, for example, can prove quite challenging. Yet, we persevered to keep this pattern of presentation to prove our point that writers can make words bend to their will. Hopefully, you will also think we were successful in this regard. If nothing else, it may add a number of new words to your vocabulary repertoire. Maybe your Scrabble game will never be the same again!

One other point I (Bob) want to make here is that we added another fun thing with each chapter. We pulled some fantastic quotes from some of the best and most famous writers. Each chapter starts with one of these. These are great fun as a lead-in thought to each chapter. Some are humorous, almost all are inspirational, many are thought-provoking. Here’s the quote we used for chapter J: “Just Be Yourself” from playwright, novelist, and short story writer Somerset Maugham:

“If you can tell stories, create characters, devise incidents, and have sincerity and passion, it doesn’t matter how you write.”

Maugham was being a bit tongue-in-cheek, of course. How you write does matter. But if you can tell stories and create characters and the rest of it, with even just a bit of passion—and study the craft of writing—how you write can and will fall into place.

Something missing from so many books on writing is you. You are what makes your stories, your writing, unique from all others. We want you to include you in your writing. The phrase mentioned above, “just be yourself” sounds simple, like something any writer would naturally do, right? But perhaps not so much. Why? Well, people often doubt their ability. They doubt their time. They doubt whether they have something interesting and unique to say. In the same chapter we referenced above, we write:

You have a story to tell, and only you can tell it. A true writer’s passion will push you to keep pecking at that keyboard. It’s in there—inside of you. The words will keep coming out. Many a new author has expressed this sentiment: “Seeing that book to completion was like giving birth.”

We’ll give you the encouragement to keep pecking at that keyboard. Also in that same chapter, we write:

Don’t forget: your writing is you. These are your words, driven by your passion, carefully crafted by your thoughts and ideas, and maybe even your ideals. You want readers to identify you with your writing style, your plot conceptions, and how you put your stories together. Don’t try to be like anyone else or write like the style or voice of another.

But most importantly, it is not the cleverness of how the book is constructed, but the content within it that we feel will be the most beneficial to you as the reader. While we could have covered twice as many topics as we have in this book, we feel we have covered those topics that are the most critical in producing top quality output.

“There are many books on writing,” you say. “So why another?” That is a very good question, and, we think, we have a good answer. First, just one book is rarely sufficient to answer all questions asked by those who write or want to write even better than they currently do. We acknowledge that and do not dare think our book is the only one you will want, or need, to purchase during your writing career. Yet, we do feel ours is one that you want to have in your arsenal.

Second, what I (Randy) discovered as I began my writing journey was that knowing the rules about writing and applying those rules are not necessarily the same thing. You’ve heard the expression: rules are made to be broken. Well, that is certainly true when writing a book. I wish someone had told me this truth in the beginning. In this book we aim to tell you some important rules, but just as importantly, we aim to tell you when they can be—gently—broken. So we’re giving you what we (Randy as an author, and Bob as an editor, writer, and author) wished we had known and understood when we started our writing and editing journeys. Knowledge is power and we want you to be as powerful a writer as you can be.

So, here is to happy writing. It is not an easy path, but a rewarding one. We toast you on the beginning of your journey, and we will be there on the other side to applaud you when you have arrived.

Love,

Randy & Bob

Dr. Randy C. Dockens has a fascination with science and with the Bible, holds Ph.D. degrees in both areas, and is a man not only of faith and science, but also of creativity. He believes that faith and science go hand in hand without being enemies of each other.

After completing his bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from Auburn University he went on to graduate school at Auburn and completed his first doctorate degree in Pharmaceutics. He began his scientific career as a pharmacokinetic reviewer for the Food and Drug Administration and later joined a leading pharmaceutical company as a pharmacokineticist, which is a scientist who analyzes how the human body affects drugs after they have been administered (i.e, absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and excreted).

Through the years, he has worked on potential medicines within several disease areas, including cardiovascular, fibrosis, and immunoscience to seek and develop new and novel medicines in these therapy areas.

He has also had his attention on the academic study of the Bible. He earned a second doctorate in Biblical Prophecy from Louisiana Baptist University after receiving a master’s degree in Jewish Studies from the Internet Bible Institute under the tutelage of Dr. Robert Congdon.

Randy has recently retired from his pharmaceutical career and is spending even more time on his writing efforts. He has written several books that span dystopian, end-time prophecy, science fiction, and uniquely told Bible stories. All his books, while fun to read, are futuristic, filled with science to give them an authentic feel, have a science fiction feel to them, and allows one to learn some aspect of Biblical truth one may not have thought about before. This is all done in a fast-paced action format that is both entertaining and provides a fun read for his readers.

He has also written some nonfiction books as well. One is to show how all humans are connected from God’s viewpoint by looking at biblical prophecy. This book shows how all scripture is connected and inclusive of everyone. In addition, he and his editor have written a book about writing. This book not only addresses the techniques of writing, but what makes writing unique to each author. It conveys not only how to better hone one’s craft of writing but also the brand an author wants to portray. This helps an author make their writing unique as well as captivating for his/her audience. A companion book to this one regarding self-editing techniques will also soon be available.

Dear Reader, Love Dr. Helen Ofosu

Dear Reader,

I’m so glad you have chosen to read my book, How to be Resilient in Your Career: Facing Up to Barriers at Work!

I poured a lot into writing something that is easy to read, can be read in whatever order suits your priorities, and is based on facts and experience you can count on.

I’ve been working as a Work and Business Psychologist (officially called an Industrial and Organizational Psychologist) for over 20 years. I have become very good at evaluating potential employees for jobs or for their suitability for developmental programs that should help them progress faster in their careers. I’ve also become quite good at succession planning and leadership assessment and development.

One thing I’ve noticed is that some people have amazing potential, but they never live up to it. This is often due to a lack of opportunity and not understanding the unwritten rules that govern most workplaces. In my book, I spend some time examining many of those unwritten rules.

In my role as an executive and career coach, I have also noticed that some people who come from diverse backgrounds need to navigate around many barriers that others can’t or don’t see. This book is especially helpful for those people.

How to be Resilient in Your Career: Facing Up to Barriers at Work tackles the top ten subject areas that I have been addressing since 2012 as an executive and career coach. I tackle topics such as underemployment, the impostor syndrome, how our identities impact our work lives and professional relationships, setting professional boundaries, navigating toxic workplaces, and more.

This book is aimed at individuals and also therapists, counsellors, and social workers who help clients with work-related matters. In my experience, surviving certain career-related challenges (e.g., becoming a scapegoat, being pushed off a glass cliff, or workplace bullying/harassment) is a lot easier with the support of an experienced mental health professional. This book arms those professionals who have lots of clinical experience but less corporate experience.

This book is also an excellent resource for people who don’t have access to a reliable and credible career coach. It can be your pocket mentor and cheat codes all in one. It’s all the things I wish I’d known when I started my career over twenty years ago. Since I believe in good karma, it’s also partly a public service announcement to help people recognize and avoid certain work-related problems.

If you are looking for a book that is practical enough to learn from and impactful enough to make a difference in your life, this is it.

Happy Reading!

Dr. Helen Ofosu

In good times and bad, resilience is one of the major keys to success – including career success. Dr. Helen Ofosu believes this applies to employees and entrepreneurs, individual contributors, subject matter experts, leaders, and executives.

That’s why her approach to career and executive coaching is to help people get ahead in a way that insulates them from future setbacks – or recover if things have gone sideways. This is also why, as a consultant, she helps organizations become stronger and more resilient, so they are ready for both the anticipated and the unexpected challenges that all organizations face at some point.

Part of what sets her apart from many career and executive coaches is her experience on the inside, as an HR and professional development professional, within large corporate workplaces and her intimate knowledge of typical HR processes and systems.

Clients come to her when the stakes are high. They can count on her to share insights and customized services that few others can deliver. They love that she has developed countless hiring tools and helped to resolve many HR problems over the years.

Her “insider” experience gives her clients an edge in getting hired and promoted in the public (and private) sector, and in managing their careers as they progress.

And as an Industrial/Organizational Psychologist (her field is more commonly known as Work and Business Psychology), she takes an evidence-based approach by using the latest research and best practices to increase the odds of her clients’ success.

Dear Reader, Love Jamie Linn Saloff

Dear Reader,

I have immense gratitude for every reader who reads my book, whether it is a digital copy, a print copy they bought at a store, or waited patiently to arrive in the mail, or even found as a hand-me-down, because there are so many other choices. To be “chosen” as a read, means a lot to me as a writer, as a lover of books, and as a person deeply driven to help others, even if it is in the small way of sharing stories and ideas of life transformation.

The amazing thing about Hatch is that it can be started at any section. It also can serve as a moment’s inspiration just by picking it up, letting it fall open, and reading some of the quotes in the sidebars. These are quotations that inspired me as I went through my own transformations, I hope they inspire you as well.

This book began as a story about surviving cancer, but as friends read it, they asked many questions. I realized that what they really wanted to know was not about how I survived, but how I learned to use my inner gifts to not only improve my health, but the whole of my life and purpose. They wanted to know, how they too could better use their intuition, their inner voice, and the marvelous messages in the world all around them. So, gradually, I expanded the story until it no longer resembled a tale about a young girl who had cancer, but it became and self-help book so you, dear reader, and others, could take the life they were given and transform it into the highest and best it could possibly be.

This may sound far-fetched and over-rated, so let me break it down a little more. When you read this book and do the work as explained, you will learn to receive messages from your physical body that can help you discern your next steps in life. You can explore the gifts in your heritage and how they can help you look back to leap forward. You can discover the amazing guidance that comes from within and from all around you. You only need to know how to listen and be aware of them. (And none of this is hard!)

Again, my biggest hope for you, dear reader, is that you will find many beneficial ideas within the book’s pages that help you forward your life in amazing ways. My wish for you is that you will find a path to a fantastic life. And my hope is that the more people who read these words and do the work will make the world a happier and more joyful place to live. But we start with one person at a time. Perhaps that person begins with you.

Jamie Linn Saloff is passionate about aiding fiercely independent, misfit, square pegs trapped in an unfulfilling life. Author, teacher, story weaver, spiritual counselor, seer of visions, pathfinder, for over thirty years Jamie’s taught how to reignite your heart by listening to your body groan and your soul weep. If you could, how would you change your life?

While bravely facing the motherlode of difficult life challenges, you never dreamt the result would be a soul-sucking, heart-crushing existence.

Although you try to ignore the emptiness, detachment, and feeling that you don’t belong, you rarely make changes. It just seems too impossible for so many reasons. Instead, you silenced your heart’s nagging with self-sacrifice, food stuffing, or by becoming a workaholic.

Contemplating ending her life, Jamie Saloff chose instead to hatch a new one. She knows how self-doubt and unworthiness can cloud our ability to move forward after the darkness of illness, grief, trauma, or tragedy – because she’s faced it too.

In Hatch – A Change Your Life Guide, Saloff walks readers through her step-by-step method to:

• Awaken your soul’s purpose by listening to your heart’s voice

• Find confidence in your next forward step by hearing your body speak

•See messages of guidance everywhere by learning where to look

• Uncover your future in your past by examining your ancestral heritage

• And much, much more…

“It’s a simple question “Do you wish you could change your life for the better” while the answer is an easy one – do you have any idea of how to accomplish the task? “Hatch – A Change Your Life Guide” gives you a systematic process that will take you on a journey of physical, emotional, and spiritual healing…I highly recommend this wonderful and enlightening book” – Yolanda Renee

Dear Reader Love Amy W. Vogel

Dear Reader,

If we were having coffee (or tea or sparkling lemonade, my favorite!) I would be full of questions. Wait, no, the first thing I would say to you is THANK YOU. Picking up a book like mine takes courage. Devotionals can often be written to make you feel good about yourself (or bad depending on who is doing the writing). Mine is different, on purpose. I wrote it to walk through the process of healing myself after lots of loss over a very short period. So, for you to trust me and enter that space to seek your own healing and wholeness?

That’s incredible. I am, no lie, eternally grateful.

Ok, then I would start asking questions. I used to work in sales and I love to connect with people, so questions are my preferred way to do that. I think my first question would be – “Why did you decide to read this?”

My next question would be, “What would you like to start healing from?”

And my third question would be, “Why is the idea of an invitation from Jesus appealing?”

I didn’t write this book from any particular doctrinal place. I also didn’t write this book exclusively for those who call themselves Christians or are die-hard Church goers. In fact, in this process of healing, my faith has extended beyond the brand name of “Christian.” I am a huge fan of Jesus. I love the movement He lived and died for. That is the vision I see as what can heal the world. I also have experienced how systems implemented in His name are harmful, at a personal, national, global and historical level.

I’m not here to convince you to get saved or to change your beliefs. I wrote this book as my own act of remembering the person of Jesus is full of magic and mystery and His mission was to bring us closer to God, which brings us closer to our true selves.

My prayer, hope and wish for you as you embark on this journey with Come to Me: A Devotional for Healing from Hurt is that you would catch your own vision for a God who meets you in your pain and desires to bring you through it into a place of joy, beauty and potential. Remember, where you are is only the place you start.

Writing this book was a difficult journey but I am grateful for what the Spirit of God did in me during that time. And now I’m grateful for what is happening in you as you read it.

May Love bless you, keep you and fill you!

Love,

Amy

Dear Reader, Love Kristina Mand-Lakhiani #BecomingFlawesome

Dear Reader…

First of all, I want to thank you for choosing this book because a book truly comes to life when it finds a reader. As I wrote this book, I envisioned speaking directly to you. Although you might assume it's about me, my story, and my journey, it's not. I utilize my life as an illustration to convey the ideas I wish to share with you. It is, nonetheless, a journey—an exciting and somewhat unpredictable one. Despite the questions I receive about my book, I don't want to spoil the experience for you.

Imagine yourself standing on the doorstep of your house, much like the Hobbit in "The Lord of the Rings," preparing to embark on a long journey through hills, forests, and mountains. I don't want to spoil that journey for you by detailing all the trolls and dragons you might encounter. Instead, I aim to be the voice that assures you of peace and guides you safely back home. Similar to the Hobbit, I want to emphasize that you will make it safely, but you won't be the same as before. Consider it a gentle warning, for when we change, the world around us changes too.

However, with that being said, I want you to know that I am here with you throughout this entire journey. The structure of this book is designed to provide you with all you need from the very beginning chapters. I will prepare you for a remarkable leap of faith we will take in the second part of the book because I genuinely want you to succeed. Often, when faced with challenges we are unprepared to confront, we may retreat back into our caves. I want to help you grow a thicker skin, not out of aggression, but to ensure you have the courage and skills necessary to navigate this journey and rediscover your path.

Even without personally knowing you, I can tell you that behind all the walls, layers, facades, varnish, and polish lies a beautiful soul waiting to be revealed to the world. It's a powerful and wonderful essence, and my goal is to assist you in reconnecting with your true self. This is what the book is about, and I understand that this explanation may not align with your initial expectations. Yet, my book itself is also not what you expect. It's a journey, and it's a journey meant for you to embark upon.

If you're ready, I am here to guide you on this transformative journey.

Perfection. We all dream of living by it, feeling it, being it…

And it is in the name of perfection that we demonise our flaws, make ourselves ‘less-than,’ and render ourselves vulnerable to the shame of not being good enough.

We live in a society that subliminally encourages us to wear metaphorical masks, slay our inner sadness, and ignore our imperfections, or as Kristina refers to them, her ‘dragons.’ Even within the world of personal development and spirituality, toxic perfectionism lurks in the shadows.

In Kristina’s upcoming book Becoming Flawesome #BecomingFlawesome, she reflects on her own story, her battle against perfectionism, and what it took for her to return to what she now deems to be her most authentic self. Being described as “10 years worth of therapy in one book,Becoming Flawsome is a celebration of our whole selves, warts and all, and the glory that is to be found in living in our truth.

Every chapter is closed with reflection points and exercises to encourage the readers to dive deep into the essence of who they truly are, what their values are, and how to navigate an oftentimes overwhelming world.

In this book, Kristina breaks the mould as she takes the reader on a journey through:

  • The dark, controversial side of ‘personal growth,’ and the insecurities that thrive on it

  • Self-care vs self-love, and why you need both

  • What authenticity actually is, beyond the buzz

  • The ‘Hermione Syndrome,’ and how to diagnose if you’re secretly suffering from it
