Dear Reader…
Are you comfortable? Go ahead put your feet up! Do you have
a sweet nibble on hand? That’s better. Now you’re ready to immerse yourself in
the world of A Darker Shore. No need for a time machine, just flip the page and
you will find yourself in 1926 on a ferry leaving the island
of Crete, your destination is France.
The wind is blowing in your hair, and you can taste the salt of the ocean on
the breeze. Gulls squawk and circle above you, white dashes against the
cloudless blue sky. You are setting off on a new adventure!
Books have always been my greatest source of escapism,
offering a whole world of endless possibility through the power of a constellation
of twenty-six letters. They bring the Pyramids of Giza into your living room,
foreign landscapes come alive in your mind’s eye, the battle between good and
evil is fought as you stave of sleep just to turn another page. The desire to
travel back in history, to illustrate a time and place we can never experience
for ourselves and to borrow from the past to allow readers to relive it through
the eyes of characters who seem so real we wish we could meet them in life,
that is what I aim for and that is why I began to write.
The Lady Evelyn Mysteries (“A Poisonous Journey” and the
newest “A Darker Shore”) are my efforts to create something that transports,
engages and entertains, in the ways I have been all my life by the many books I
have enjoyed.
Lady Evelyn is a character I had in my mind long before I
truly sat down to write the first mystery in this series. I wanted a figure who
was flawed, but thoughtful; a little clumsy, but clever; wary but brave. In
other words, I wanted to create a character with whom people could identify,
someone who could take your hand through the pages and invite you on an
adventure like a good friend, to explore and experience a time and place and
story you had not done before, which is exactly what I look for in books I read
myself. We may all have that inner Miss Marple – Evelyn certainly does, which
admittedly gets her into the occasional spot of trouble – and books are the
best way to explore our sleuthing abilities and indulge in something that would
ordinarily be entirely desirable to avoid!
If you are looking for a new fictional friend (aren’t we
all?), a few hours of escape to a faraway land, and a nail-biting murder
mystery to sink your teeth into (pun intended), join Lady Evelyn on her new
adventure, and I hope you enjoy!

1926: A year has passed
since the events of "A Poisonous Journey" and Lady Evelyn has made a
home for herself in Greece, living with her cousin, Briony, her husband,
Jeffrey and Daniel Harper. Disturbing this island idyll is a letter, which
arrives from France with troubling information about the Daniel’s
long-believed-dead brother, Henry. A new journey awaits! With the shadows of
the Great War reaching out, Lady Evelyn and Daniel voyage to Amiens in Northern
France with the aim of discovering the truth behind the ominous letter. Upon
their arrival, they are met not with clarity but rather with crime. Murder, to
be precise. Is it linked to their presence in France, or even worse, to Henry
himself? Evelyn and Daniel must confront
their history as they try to make sense of the present before the killer can
strike again, and the secrets of the past are lost forever.
