Dear Reader…
I’m thrilled you’ve started my Erica Rosen MD Trilogy. Whether you’re a physician, a scientist, or just someone who likes a good story and enjoys learning a little about the world, I hope you enjoy meeting Erica and learning about the conundrums she is faced with. While the scenarios in my book haven’t happened (to my knowledge), they are not science fiction but are within the realm of possibilities.
You will soon learn that Erica is a young, smart pediatrician with a great deal of empathy. She has reason to be particularly sympathetic to her disabled patients, as her brother had cerebral palsy and was deaf. Sadly, he died shortly before the first book begins, the victim of a motor vehicle accident.
Through her practice in San Francisco, Erica becomes involved in a new struggle in each book. It’s hard to know how much to reveal when writing about my novels, wanting to say enough to be tantalizing while not disclosing so much that surprises are revealed. The first book, Unnatural, deals with a secret gene-editing project run by the Chinese government. This results in the birth of “unnatural” babies. The second book, Unwitting, is about training innocent autistic youth to become “unwitting” suicide bombers. The third book, Unforeseen, revolves around a disreputable drug manufacturer whose shortcuts result in “unforeseen” consequences for patients.
All my books required considerable research. Some of my research examined the central themes in two of my books: gene editing and drug manufacturing. I did not need to research autism for my second book, as my younger son has autism and served as the template for the main autistic character in Unwitting, Zaron. If Zaron seems unreal to you, bear in mind that he is a close approximation to a real person. He is not what is regarded as a high-functioning person with autism–someone who can communicate, hold a job, and function in society but is “odd.” He is severely disabled and can only communicate in a very limited way.
Aside from the main themes, I also researched many other matters, such as the various cultures and locations in my novels.
I hope you read all three of these works and walk away thinking you enjoyed them and learned some interesting facts. Although these are stand-alone novels, I believe they are more enjoyable if read in sequence to see how Erica’s life evolves over time.
All best wishes,
Love,
Deven

Dr. Erica Rosen is perplexed when she sees a young Chinese girl with blue eyes in her San Francisco pediatrics clinic. The girl’s mother, Ting, is secretive, and Erica suspects she has entered the country illegally. Later, Erica encounters Ting’s son and discovers he has an unusual mutation. Erica learns that Ting’s children underwent embryonic stem cell gene editing as part of a secret Chinese government-run program.
The Chinese government wants to murder Ting’s son to prevent others from learning about his unusual mutation and the secret gene-editing program. At Ting’s urging, Erica heads to China to expose the program and rescue the infant Ting was forced to leave behind, all while attempting to evade the watchful eye of the Chinese government.

Pediatrician Erica Rosen is stymied when two of her patients don’t respond to medicine as expected. When other patients later develop strange, unexpected illnesses, she is determined to get to the bottom of it.
Meanwhile, the department’s newest pediatrician, Dr. Nilsen, appears to be trying to steal her patients. Erica suspects he is after her job as the clinic director. She also discovers Dr. Nilsen has become romantically involved with her trusted assistant, Martha. One evening, while looking for patient information on Martha’s desk, Erica comes across a list with the names of some of her patients. A boy who recently became ill with a mysterious malady is on the list and has an asterisk by his name. What does that mean?
Erica is convinced something nefarious is underfoot, and Dr. Nilsen, rather than simply being after her job, is engaged in a dangerous scheme involving her patients. Unable to recruit the help of law enforcement in a timely manner, she realizes she must take matters into her own hands. As she proceeds with her investigation, she is unaware of the dangers she is about to encounter.
