Dear Reader…
You may be tempted to ditch Lord Shallow early on.
That’s because one plot point could be a dealbreaker for romance readers: The hero,
Sebastian, is secretly married. Romance between him and Gwynne, the heroine, is
seemingly impossible. Besides: Would we root for a hero willing to break his
marriage vows?
But little is as it seems. To all of London,
Sebastian is a pretentious fop who prizes his tailor over his dukedom. In
reality, he’s an obsessively rational fellow, as honorable as they come.
Gwynna arrives at his gloomy castle one night, following
clues about her connection to his family—kept secret by the cold grandfather
who raised her. But her quest evolves to something deeper—to find her voice and
claim her legacy as the descendant of Wales’
most revered war hero. She ends up challenging every principle Sebastian holds
dear.
Lord Shallow is about character, and how love comes
from our truest selves. The setting—Anglesey, a
picturesque island off North Wales—resonated for me. It’s
dotted with ancient Neolithic tombs and mysterious stone circles, their
meanings lost to unrecorded history. I stood on a cliff jutting out into the sea,
captivated by the fluffy white clouds reflecting off sun-dappled waves as far
as I could see. It felt like staring into infinity—past and future—where love
transcends even time. I wanted to write a book that captured that.
Alas, I couldn’t stop writing! Themes grew bigger, chapters
longer. Welsh legends fascinated me, so I tossed them in. (I cut 12,000 words
from my original draft.)
Lord Shallow is Book 2 in the Maitland's Rogues series,
about daring English rogues who clandestinely for their country during the
Napoleonic Wars. Hardened and deadly, they have no use for love—until it
ensnares them…

About the Book
Gwynna Owen might be the last true Princess of Wales, but she needs this very English duke to claim her legacy and vanquish a tyrant. When Sebastian quickly sees through her boy’s disguise, she must plead her case with only a rusty dagger—and sapphire eyes that conjure what he most wishes to avoid.
AUTHOR’S NOTE: One early surprise may be a deal breaker for some romance fans. If you’re looking for classic Regency historical that fits a formula, Lord Shallow may not be your cup of tea. Yet character will out. Here you’ll find a man who is so much more than he seems and a woman who’s finding her voice after years of having it suppressed. Their struggle as they make their way to one another is this story’s truth.
