If the government is tracking my Internet searches, I can
only assume that I am either on a watchlist right now or that my search pattern
was amateurish enough to slide under the red flag threshold. Let me explain.
Genres of fantasy, occult, the paranormal and sci-fi all
require a suspension of disbelief on the part of the reader. In my novella,
“Alexandra Forever: Beginnings”, I ask the reader to embrace the story’s rules
on demonic possession, psionics and the nether world.
To offset this, and help create a story that readers can
emotionally invest in, I attempted to make everything else at least plausible.
People behaving believably helps as does strictly abiding by the implied
in-universe rules. Wherever possible I also adhere to the practical science of
how things function in the real world. This all serves to anchor and highlight
the fantastic when it comes up. A spark seemingly shines brighter against the
mundane.
It was the pursuit of peripheral realism that led to my
research into helicopters, guns and explosives. I only had two questions about
helicopters and fortunately my partner’s son is a helicopter mechanic. Learning
about guns from the Internet was reasonably straightforward. Oddly, researching
jury-rigged explosives on the World-Wide-Web wasn’t as fruitful.
Fortunately, it just so happened that one of my clients at
the time I was writing the novella, was a privately
held defense and security contractor. It was the owner of the company
who gave me the idea for the anti-demon response Alexandra cobbled together
from what was available in her workshop. He outlined the assemblage from start
to finish.
To his credit, and my concern, he, in fact, had two great
ideas; right off the top of his head in less time than it took to get his
coffee to the perfect shade of caramel. Perhaps of interest, the one I did not
use, while awesome, didn’t fit the story setting because it involved tailpipe
exhaust.
Alexandra’s next adventure might have a more urban setting.
All my best,
D.W. Richards
