Everything is important. Pay attention to every detail. It’s all there in front of you.
True, you’re going to keep jumping timelines. But there’s a reason for that. Just as in real life, everything that happens in the past has a direct influence on what happens in the future. And don’t worry...that timeline that started 30 years in the past? Stick with it...it will catch up to the present-day timeline...eventually.
You’ve just read the first chapter, and now you’re confused. Why would someone supposedly so uninteresting and so unremarkable suddenly disappear? Well, turn the page, and we’ll begin to find out...together.
We start by following five college friends, who find their way together by chance...and eventually find their way apart. Thirty years is a long time. And life moves on, right? You can’t expect things to stay the same forever, can you? But is the story of Jason, Joel, Mary and Ziggy relevant to Joel’s modern-day disappearance?
If you pay attention, you’ll see. That note sent to Mary? It’ll all make sense. The emails and text messages from a man who’s either dead, held captive or in hiding? Well, those will make sense too. In fact, it all makes sense, when you think about it. There was really only one way this could turn out...

Author: Tom Nixon
The sudden and strange disappearance of Joel Thomas brings together his ex-wife and best friend in a search for answers. As Mary and Jason seek out the truth, their quest consistently turns up more questions than clues. In another time, the story of a long-time group of college friends plays out across 30 years of history, revealing the highs and lows of a group that vowed to maintain their friendship until death. Is the answer to Joel’s mysterious departure found in a simple note sent to Mary, or is it locked somewhere back in time? Told in alternating voices and timelines, Nixon’s The Long Lost tells a story of both intrigue and suspense — along with sentimentality and introspection — as he examines the painful discoveries realized when childhood friends grow up...and grow apart.
